The sun is finally shining and the flowers are creeping out of the soil. It must be summer!
Well, nearly. With June just around the corner, it’s time to get your garden into ship-shape. As the nights get longer, we can start to think about barbecues, pool parties and garden festivities.
Of course, before any of that happens, you need to get those green fingers out and tidy up! Our garden is usually strewn with problems after the harsh winter. But, it only takes a weekend of hard work to pull things back into shape. Here’s how you can get started.
Start planting
Now is the perfect time to start planting for summer. The May weather is just perfect for saplings, flowers and bushes. There’s plenty of daylight sun to inspire growth. There’s also enough moisture in the air left hanging from April.
Use this to your advantage and start planting the first flowers and trees. We suggest starting with Crape Myrtle trees. They’re easy to plant and don’t require too much attention. They grow quickly and flower with bright colours.
Build a deck
May is the best time to get stuck into a good DIY project. Building a deck could be just the job you’re looking for. They’re surprisingly easy to put together once you get your hands on the right timber.
Follow a simple guide and you can have it completed in a weekend or two. It will provide the perfect place to entertain in those summer evenings. Invite the neighbours or family over and spend a night in the garden.
Bring the lawn back to life
We don’t know about you, but our lawn is covered with dead patches and weeds after winter. It needs care and attention to nurture it back to full health.
Start by spreading new grass seeds over barren areas and keep it well watered. Get deep into the roots of the weeds and remove them from the source. Of course, you can also take the cheat’s route and use artificial grass. It looks fantastic and removes all the hassle!
Take a power hose to the paths
Concrete walkways and paths gather dirt slowly. So much so, you may not even notice the build up. Buy or borrow a power hose and use it to uncover the original flagstone underneath.
The hose will blast dirt away and help pull the weeds out of the cracks. You’ll be surprised at how effective this is. You’ll bring the whole garden to life with this simple task.
Clean up the back of the house
Many gardeners forget this crucial aspect of gardening. If you’re in the back garden, the appearance of your home plays a huge part. If the paint is peeling off the windows, the whole garden suffers. Take the time to undertake some home maintenance outside. Perhaps you could re-render the back aspect or simply clean the windows.
Start with these easy tricks and you’ll be well on your way to a beautiful summer garden. When June and July finally arrive, you’ll appreciate the work. Good luck!
