The 1st of November is World Vegan Day, and the whole of November is World Vegan Month.

It’s hard to escape the rise of Veganism at the moment and it’s easy to understand why. Not eating meat or dairy products is better for the environment, and, of course, it’s cruelty-free. It’s also possible to extend the concept of veganism to other areas of your consumer behaviour to be that through the clothes you wear, or even the sofa you sit on.

Here at Maker&Son, we have always believed in making Natural Furniture. But we wanted to go one step further and make something that wasn’t just natural, but also something that is completely free of animal derivatives. And, like a standard range of furniture, we believed that having something that is vegan, didn’t mean it had to be full of harmful plastics that never degrade. Luxury and quality and vegan and natural should not be mutually exclusive.

Vegan

Our vegan range is still being developed, but we have found our natural (and, of course, vegan) suppliers for the interior of our sofas (springs and stuffing). It’s also worth bearing in mind that glue, and most paints, usually contain milk products which are used to bind the liquid together. We can tell you too much about how our vegan range is constructed, just yet. It’s a bit of a secret because we believe that other luxury furniture makers will be looking at how they can make a 100% animal product free piece of furniture pretty soon too.

What we can tell you about our Vegan range is that by using products that are not derived from animals (feathers, typically) is that there is no loss of comfort and, our vegan range will be just as comfortable as our traditional pieces. What’s more, the components we use to make our vegan range will also be traceable, natural and come from 100% sustainable sources.

So back to those myths, does vegan furniture have to be made from artificial materials like plastics? Absolutely not. Does vegan furniture mean that it won’t be as durable as other well made luxury pieces of furniture? Also no. Will vegan furniture just be a passing trend? We don’t think so, which is why, just like our none vegan range of pieces, we’ll also guarantee the frame for 30 years.

The world is always changing. But what has become apparent to us his how many of our current and prospective customers want to invest in a much more sustainable way of living which extends not only the food that they eat but the way they travel and, of course, the furniture they buy. At Maker&Son we have always believed that leaving the world a better place than the way we found it should be an integral part of our mission. Our vegan range is the next step in our journey to change, not only the face of luxury furniture retailing but also, hopefully, the way people think about the choices they make when it comes to furnishing their home.
